Frank Owen Gehry - USA Cafe Fish, Kobe 1986 - 1987 |
The Cafe Fish in Kobe is an early international design by Frank O. Gehry.
Located in a crappy docks neighborhood of the city, almost below a
heavy traffic bridge, the Cafe Fish is an architectural ensemble,
consisting of three volumes. The main volume is a simple construction
made of corrugated metal and containing the restaurant spaces. The huge
fish sculpture acts as a gesture to distract visitors to the
restaurant. The third volume is made of dark sheet metal and contains
the adjoining rooms. Of course the enormous fish sculpture is the most
striking part of the ensemble, but it is inaccessible to the public.
The voluminous fish is clad with copper mesh so that it is transparent
or glimmers in the sun.
