Klas Anshelm - Sweden Malmö Konsthall St Johannesgatan 7 1971 - 1973 |
The Konsthall Malmö, inaugurated
in 1975, was built according to a design by the Swedish architect and
artist Klas Anshelm. This building is considered to be one of Klas
Anshelm's most important designs, and received the Kasper Salin prize
in 1974. The design for the municipal art gallery shows many of the
signature elements of Klas Anshelm. The building is characterized by a
simple plan form with only minor aberrations and the use of raw
materials. These raw materials can be encountered in the concrete of
the façade and on the interior in form of the floors made of unfinished
fir. The building provides a very flexible and bright
exhibition area of 2 000 m². The natural light for the exhibition space
enters through more than five hundred skylights. Later a café was added
to the building,, which otherwise remains more or less unchanged. In
1994 the Konsthall Malmö was renovated
and expanded into the adjacent brick building.
