Josep Lluís Sert (01.07.1902 - 15.03.1983) was a Spanish architect and urban planner of the modern age. He studied from 1921 to 1928 at the Escuela Superior de Architectura in Barcelona. After graduating, he worked in Paris with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Along with other like-minded people e was one of the founders of GATEPAC (Grupo de Artistas and Técnicos Españoles Para la Arquitectura Contemporánea / Group of Spanish Artists and Technicians for Modern Architecture). His most famous works include the Spanish Pavilion for the 1937 World's Fair.
In 1939 Josep Lluís Sert moved to America. There he dealt in particular with urban development projects and in 1952 had a one-year visiting professorship at Yale University. In the following year, he succeeded Walter Gropius as dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He held this job until 1969. Together with some partners, Josep Lluís Sert founded an office which mainly worked on projects in the USA. The construction tasks included public buildings, office buildings, residential and commercial buildings. In this way, some of the most famous buildings of Josep Lluís Sert were created in the neighborhoud of the Harvard University. From 1947 to 1956 Josep Lluís Sert was President of CIAM (Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne).

Nach seinem Studienabschluss arbeitete er in Paris bei Le Corbusier und Pierre Jeanneret. Er gehörte zusammen mit weiteren Gleichgesinnten zu den Gründern der GATEPAC (Grupo de Artistas y Técnicos Españoles Para la Arquitectura Contemporánea / Gruppe spanischer Künstler und Techniker für die moderne Architektur). Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählt der spanische Pavillon für die Weltausstellung von 1937.
Im Jahr 1939 zog Josep Lluís Sert nach Amerika. Dort beschäftigte er sich insbesondere mit Stadtentwicklungsprojekten und hatte 1952 eine einjährige Gastprofessur an der Yale University. Im Folgejahr konnte er die Nachfolge von Walter Gropius als Dekan der Harvard Graduate School of Design antreten. Dieses Amt hatte er bis 1969 inne. Zusammen mit einigen Partnern gründete Josep Lluís Sert ein Büro welches vor allem Projekte in den USA bearbeitete. Zu den Bauaufgaben gehörten öffentliche Gebäude, Bürobauten, Wohn- und Geschäftshäuser. Auf diese weise entstanden einige der bekanntesten Gebäude von Josep Lluís Sert in der Umgebung der Harvard University. In den Jahren 1947 - 1956 war Josep Lluís Sert Präsident des CIAM (Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne).
