agps - Switzerland

agps is a design team with studios in Zurich and Los Angeles, bridging the domains of urban design, infrastructure, landscape, and architecture. The group considers architecture as a collaborative enterprise, investigating relationships between design processes and the built environment. From the development of urban strategies to the exploration of construction techniques, the work engages in a search for the yet undiscovered; conceptual, multilayered, and succinct approaches to architecture are explored.

The firm was founded in 1982 in the United States and established its studio in Switzerland in 1992. Marc Angélil, Sarah Graham, and Manuel Scholl are current partners, Reto Pfenninger and Hanspeter Oester former partners, and Elke Eichmann, Daniel Roos, and Pascale Wappel present members of the board.

Their built projects include the Midfield Terminal at the airport of Zurich, the town center and light-rail station of Esslingen, the remodeling of a factory for housing and commercial uses on the shore of Lake Zurich, the headquarters extension of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Gland-Geneva, the Children’s Museum of Los Angeles (CMLA), the aerial tram in Portland, Oregon, the Zurich International School, a freeway cover with park in Zurich, sports and infrastructure facilities for adidas in Germany, as well as a range of multiple-family residential projects in Switzerland and single-family houses in the United States.

agps has received numerous awards both in North America and Europe, including several American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards, the city of Zurich prize for best building, the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA) sustainability award, and innovation prizes for steel, concrete, and timber construction. The work has been exhibited internationally, including the Venice Biennale, Steirischer Herbst in Graz, LA Next in Los Angeles, the Architecture Forum in Zurich, the Aedes Gallery in Berlin, La Galerie d’ Architecture in Paris, the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and the University of Addis Ababa.
