Werner Stücheli - Switzerland
In 1936 Werner Stücheli (10.08.1916 - 07.03.1983) started to study at the ETH in Zurich, where he graduated under Otto Rudolf Salvisberg. From his graduation in 1941 until 1944 he stayed at the ETH and worked as an assistant with Hans Hofmann. Additionally he worked with William Dunkel. After his 1945 success in the competition for a Veterinary Hospital of the University of Zurich, he opened his own office. He soon became one of the most successful architects of Zurich, and was able to realize a number of large buildings. Still today his buildings are present in the cityscape of zürich. The construction of the mentioned veterinary hospital was delayed for a long time, so that the cooperative residential development Köschenrüthi in Zurich-Seebach became his first realized project. Already with this ensemble of single-family homes and double-multi-family buildings, Werner Stücheli won the Award for Good Buildings in the City of Zurich. All in all he won this award nine times during his career. At this time the construction of high-rise buildings was intensively discussed in Switzerland. Werner Stücheli was an uncontested proponent of the high-rise movement. With the business house "zur Bastei", located on the so-called Schanzengraben, he could realize the first skyscraper in downtown Zurich. Built from 1953-1955, the nine-storey tower errected on a trapezoidal plan was his counter-proposal to the actually requested perimeter block development. The majority of the requested volume was concentrated in the tower, the remaining spaces were accommodated in a relatively small three-story apartment house. With this layout, the interior of the perimeter block could be opened generously to the Schanzengraben. During his career, Werner Stücheli got the opportunity to realize several high-rise buildings in the city of Zurich. As early as 1971 Ernst Stücheli and Theo Huggenberger became partners in the architectural office of Werner Stücheli. After his death, the office was continued as Stücheli Architects and still exists today under this name, albeit with changing partners.
