Ernst Gisel - Switzerland
Apartmentbuilding - Zurich
Wettingerwies 2, Zurich
1976 - 1979

On the site of today's Wettingerwies apartment building, the State Archives of the Canton of Zurich was planned. This State Archives building was also projected
by Ernst Gisel, but this project failed in the 1975 plebiscite. The finally executed building is related to the project for the State Archives with regard to the urban setting.
The L-shaped structure is arranged as a perimeter block development in the western part of the property. Between the two wings and the renovated house of the Zeltgarten,
which is a listed building, there would have been the magazine tract in the State Archives project. In the executed residential building, there is located a lively sculpture court
in this place. In addition, George Gisel, son of Ernst Gisel, designed and constructed a studio building in the courtyard.

There are housed a total of 18 apartments with two to six rooms
in the residential building Wettingerwies. The access to the apartments is made by a common staircase on
the Wettingerwies. The apartments arranged along the Promenadengasse are accessed by an open gallery. In the 2nd and 3rd floor of this wing are located two-storey apartments.
The unpretentious appearance of the building belies the fact that there are offered flats of a high standard in a preferred city district.

In the apartments can be recognized typical features of Ernst Gisel designs. So the bathrooms are equipped with a secondary access and the living room can be connected
to one of the private rooms by means of a sliding wall. In the apartments along the Promenadengasse Ernst Gisel responds to the new forms of living and the social changes.
The entire south side of the building tract consists of the same room. It is a generous private living, sleeping or working area. This organization is at the expense of the
general living room, which traditionally is privileged in terms of size and orientation. Thus, the living hall is oriented to the north, and also serves at the same time as an access
to the individual rooms. However, if the sliding wall is opened, there is a generous, ten-meter-long living space.
