Office Building Erasmushuis
Coolsingel 104, Rotterdam
1938 - 1939
The
12-storey "Erasmushuis" was built in Rotterdam between
1938 and 1939 according to a design by Willem
Marinus Dudok. The building, which was constructed
for the Hollandsche Bank-Unie, reflects a clear,
functional architecture and yet shows characteristic
decorative accents typical of the work of W.M. Dudok. The
office building, together with the post office, the city
hall and the stock exchange, survived the German bombing
of the city of Rotterdam in 1940. As a high-rise building,
this building marks the visual end of the Coolsingel. The
facades of light-coloured glazed bricks rise above a dark
granite plinth. The low plinth area stands on supports to
maintain permeability to the historic Schielandshuis and
the associated garden.
In
den Jahren 1938 bis 1939 entstand in Rotterdam das
12-stöckige "Erasmushuis" nach einem Entwurf von Willem
Marinus Dudok. Das Gebäude, welches für die
Hollandschen Bank-Unie erbaut wurde, widerspiegelt eine
klare, sachliche Architektur und zeigt dennoch
charakteristische dekorative Akzente wie sie im Werk von
W.M. Dudok typisch sind. Das Bürohaus überstand zusammen
mit dem Postamt, dem Rathaus und der Börse die deutsche
Bombardierung der Stadt Rotterdam im Jahr 1940. Als
Hochhaus markiert dieses Gebäude als optischer Abschluss
des Coolsingel. Die Fassaden aus hellen, glasierten
Ziegeln erheben sich über einem dunklen Granitsockel. Der
niedrige Sockelbereich steht auf Stützen, um die
Durchlässgkeit zum historischen Schielandshuis und dem
zugehörigen Garten aufrecht zu erhalten.
