Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt gained Hans Hollein strong international recognition. The building could be opened after only four years of construction
in June 1991. Due to its triangular shape, the building is known as "piece of cake" in Frankfurt. The museum occupies a property of equal form in the
historic center. The area was originally intended for extension buildings of the municipal offices. At this location the cityscape
had been destroyed by the bombings of World War II. Through the construction of a representativen building the city should be revived at this point.
Early in the eighties the foundation of the Museum of Contemporary Art had been decided. The well-known Viennese architect Hans Hollein
won the 1983 architectural competition. According to the conviction of Hans Hollein, that there should be no neutral spaces in a museum,
the rooms were designed itself as artistic objects which relate themself with the exhibits. For important pieces of the exhibition Hans Hollein
designed specifically tailored spaces. For example for a work of Joseph Beuys which is shown a two-storey hall. The exhibition spaces
are spread over three floors, and are connected by a complex arrangement of stairs and walkways. This layout makes the passage
through the building with surprising views into an experience. The postmodern facade of the building is related to the buildings
of the old town in terms of colors and materials.
